Distinguished British stage and film actress.
Jackson's films include Henry V (1944), Great Expectations (as Pip's cruel sister, Mrs Joe Gargery, 1946), No Room At The Inn (1947), Bhowani Junction (1956), A Tale of Two Cities (1958), Brides of Dracula (1960) and Tom Jones (1963).
This is a very rare original black and white studio publicity photograph (8" x 10") for Jackson's 1952 film, Women of Twilight, nicely signed in blue across a light area of the image. This was yet another film in which she played a hissable villain, in this instance, one Helen Allitair, as a ruthless landlady who rented out rooms to unmarried mothers, with a darker aim of selling their childen to childless couples for adoption.
The photograph shows the five main female players. First on the left is Vida Hope, followed by Joan Dowling, Freda Jackson herself, Rene Ray and finally on the right, Lois Maxwell. Condition of this photograph is remarkably good, given its age.
It is the greatest shame that Freda Jackson was typecast as a villain, which occasionally led to her being abused ans spat upon by theatregoers at the stage door. In real life she was a sweetie.
