Outstanding Australian actress. Noticed for her performance as a terrorist in the British film Who Dares Wins (1982) Davis found international success with the role of Adela Quested in David Lean's final film, A Passage to India (1984) Her performance was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. (The part called for a plain-looking actress with undercurrents of ravenous sexuality. A Washington Post review of the film described Davis as being “daringly unattractive for a leading lady”.) Later films include a cameo in Woody Allen's vehicle for Mia Farrow, Alice (1990) and a far meatier role in his Husbands and Wives (1992). Three more Allen films, Deconstructing Harry (1997), Celebrity (1998) and To Rome with Love (2012) followed. Other films include Swimming Upstream (2003), The Break-Up (2006), Marie-Antoinette (2006), The Eye 0f The Storm (2011), The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013) Salting the Battlefield (2014) and The Dressmaker (2015). Davis earned an Emmy (her second) for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the television biographical film Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001).
