Kurt Kreuger - 11346

Handsome blond German film actor. Kreuger's father, a successful businessman, cut off his son's allowance when he abandoned a medical degree at Columbia University in America to take up acting. He had bit parts in Edge of Darkness (with Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn, 1943) and Sahara (with Humphrey Bogart (1943) but his first major film credit was in Mademoiselle Fifi, a 1944 release set in the Franco-Prussian War. Kreuger was primarily offered roles in World War II movies as a German officer, prompting him to complain about being typecast as a Nazi. One of Kreuger's few opportunities to play a non-Nazi role was in 1948's Unfaithfully Yours, in which he played Rex Harrison's personal assistant. When Kreuger asked Darryl F. Zanuck for better roles, Zanuck reportedly replied: "What's your hurry? With your looks, you'll be good at 50." (Kreuger was once the third most-requested male pinup at 20th Century Fox, after Tyrone Power and John Payne.) Later roles incude Fear (with Ingrid Bergman, 1954), The Enemy Below (with Curt Jurgens and Robert Mitchum, 1957) and The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (his last film, 1967.) This is a fine vintage black and white publicity photograph (8.5" x 6.5"), signed and Inscribed ("To Ted, Best Wishes, Kurt Kreuger") in dark blue ink across the image. The bulk of his surname runs across a dark area of the photograph, reducing readability. In good overall condition.
