British singer and actress. Dixon was one of the greatest stars of British musical comedy in the 1930s, appearing with luminaries such as Jack Buchanan, Evelyn Laye, Stanley Holloway and John Gielgud. She is, however, remembered now as the lady who sang the first song on the first television show in the first official broadcast of high definition TV in the world in 1936. After the official opening ceremony of BBC Television on November 2, the show which followed, called “Variety”, featured a song called “Television”, with lyrics by James Dyrenforth and music by Kenneth Leslie-Smith. Dixon had a very fine figure and became a star of pantomime (as Principal Boy) in the post-war period. This is a very fine vintage black and white photograph (5.25" x 3.25"), flashing her legs as Robin Hood in Babes in the Wood at the London Palladium in 1950. In very good condition.
