This is part of the three-tier pelvic protection ensemble which was developed during the OP HERRICK campaign as a response to the increased IED threat. Troops were seeing an increase in injuries around their thighs and groin, and this is to aid in reducing the chance of injuries to the femoral arteries and reproductive organs.
Evidently, these are not only made in different sizes, but for different genders too. This is an example of a “Small” pair, specifically tailored for female troops. The size is 170/70 and will be the same sizing convention as with British/NATO trousers/shorts.
