Ian Carmichael - 15553

British actor, in some outstanding British comedy films in the 1950s, including the great classic, I'm All Right Jack (1959). As a young actor after the war Carmichael worked his way steadily up the ladder. He first came to notice in the West End production of Simon and Laura (1955) and was the only member of the original cast to be retained for the 1955 film version. The Boulting Brothers then gave him the key role of Stanley Windrush in Private's Progress (1956). As an innocent toff conscripted into the army, his bemusement struck a chord with a public that could remember that the war wasn't all blitz and heroism. From then on Carmichael was the film world's favourite bookish innocent. Some outstanding comedies followed, including Brothers in Law (1957), Lucky Jim (1957), Happy is the Bride (1958), and, especially, I'm All Right Jack (1959). In the 1960's Carmichael became for many the definitive Bertie Wooster playing opposite Dennis Price in television's The World of Wooster (1965-1967). In the seventies he played another silly-ass toff in a series of adaptations of five of the Lord Peter Wimsey novels between 1972 and 1975. The 1980s saw Carmichael largely retired, with only the occasional outing on television. This is a rare original glossy black and white lobby card (8" x 10") for his 1957 film, Brothers in Law, neatly signed ("Every good wish, Ian Carmichael") in blue fountain pen ink. There's a light crease across the top left corner and other minor evidence of its age but overall condition is good
