English stage and screen actress.
After learning her craft on stage, Jeans made her silent screen debut in 1917 in The Profligate. She made a notable appearance in the Ivor Novello vehicle, The Rat, in 1925 and had major roles in two early Alfred Hitchcock silents, Downhill (1927) and Easy Virtue (1928). Years later, over in Hollywood, Hitchcock didn't forget her and gave her a part in Suspicion in 1941.
In later years, Jeans settled into grand lady roles in films such as Banana Ridge (1942), Gigi (1958) and A Breath of Scandal (1960).
Jeans had an interesting private life. Married to actor Claude Rains in 1913, they split up three times before he finally divorced her in 1915 when she became pregnant with actor Gilbert Wakefield's child. She subsequently married Wakefield.
This is a very fine black and white photograph (5.5" x 3.5") of the actress striking a dramatic pose. There's a bold signature and inscription ("To John Street from Isabel Jeans") in blue ink across the lower white panel. In very good condition.
